IslandPlas is a multi‑year IUCN initiative (2024–2027) advancing circular solutions to plastic pollution in seven African Island States. Through co‑design with governments, communities and private actors, the programme strengthens waste systems, reduces plastic leakage and supports sustainable livelihoods.
OUR MISSION
We build island‑appropriate systems that prevent, separate and recover plastics at source, reducing leakage into coastlines and waterways through community collection hubs and simple logistics.
We support informal waste workers, women and youth through safer work conditions, fairer pricing, training and long‑term opportunities in the circular plastics economy.
We partner with ministries and municipalities to strengthen enabling policy, producer‑responsibility pathways and governance frameworks for sustainable circular systems.
We catalyse island‑ready innovation—from alternative materials and recycled products to digital tools and community enterprises—through challenges, micro‑grants and venture support.
Multi‑stakeholder coordination platforms are active across seven island systems, guiding circular plastics action.
Adopt‑a‑Spot groups, youth associations and local champions lead ongoing clean‑ups, sorting and community mobilisation.
Digital prototypes, alternative materials and circular enterprises are being developed and tested in partnership with communities and innovators.
