The IslandPlas Challenge team has been awarded first place at the 2025 Ocean Hackathon Africa in Cape Town for their innovative solution, Uber Plastic, a digital system designed to create value along the PET bottle recycling chain.
At the 2025 Ocean Hackathon Africa in Cape Town, Genovefa Feksi, IUCN Tanzania’s National Project Officer for IslandPlas Zanzibar, and Dr. Imogen Napper, Blue Science Manager at IUCN ESARO, led a challenge for a team of talented young professionals. After an intense 48-hour sprint with little sleep spent identifying challenges and designing innovative tools, the team emerged as the regional winner.
