Case Study

Transforming Plastic Waste Management in Coastal Island Communities

Date: February 23, 2026

Duration: 18 Months

Focus Area: Community-Based Collection & Recycling Systems

IslandPlas partnered with local authorities and community enterprises to address rising plastic leakage into coastal ecosystems. The project introduced a decentralized waste collection model, established neighborhood sorting hubs, and provided technical training to local micro-entrepreneurs.

Through awareness campaigns and school engagement programs, household segregation rates increased significantly within the first six months. The initiative also supported the launch of a small-scale plastic recovery facility, enabling collected materials to be processed locally instead of being exported or landfilled.

Key Outcomes:
  • 42% increase in household waste segregation
  • 28% reduction in unmanaged plastic leakage
  • 35 new green jobs created
  • Improved collaboration between local government and community groups

This case study demonstrates how integrated community engagement, infrastructure investment, and policy alignment can deliver measurable environmental and socio-economic impact.
